Fuse box replacement cost in 2026: what drives the price?

Elektricien vervangt een verouderde groepenkast door een moderne groepenkast

What drives the price

There is no single figure, and any quote given before someone has looked at your meter cupboard is a guess. Four things do most of the work:

  • The number of circuits. More circuits means more components and more labour.
  • The condition of the existing wiring. If it can be reused the job is straightforward. If it is perished, the scope grows.
  • Single or three phase. A three-phase board is more complex to build and to balance.
  • Whether the supply itself needs upgrading. That brings in the grid operator and their own tariff.

When is it genuinely necessary?

Replace it when there are rewireable fuses instead of breakers, when there is no RCD or only one for the whole property, when the RCD trips without a clear cause, or when you are adding an EV charger, heat pump or induction hob. If none of those apply, a functioning board does not need replacing simply because it is old.

Why sustainability upgrades push the cost up

A heat pump, an EV charger and an induction hob each want their own circuit, and the charger needs type B RCD protection. Adding all three to an old board is often not possible, which is why the upgrade and the board replacement usually end up as one project.

What to check in a quote

  • Is the inspection report included, or charged separately?
  • Are removal and disposal of the old board included?
  • How many circuits does the price actually cover?
  • Is making good after chasing part of the price?
  • What is the warranty on materials and on labour?

A quote that is materially cheaper than the others usually has one of these missing rather than a better price.

What you get for it

Beyond safety: capacity for the next fifteen years, an installation your insurer will accept without argument, and a documented inspection that will be asked for when you sell.

Veelgestelde vragen

Is an inspection report always included?

With us, yes. Check it explicitly in other quotes — it is a common exclusion and you will need the report when you sell or claim.

Can I get a grant?

Not for the board itself. Grants apply to heat pumps and insulation, and the electrical work sometimes qualifies as part of a wider scheme. We can tell you what applies to your situation.

How long does a new consumer unit last?

Typically 25 to 30 years. Capacity, not age, is usually what makes it obsolete first.
