What “certified” means in the Netherlands

This surprises most people who move here: in the Netherlands the title electrician is not protected in law. There is no register you can look someone up in, the way you can with a lawyer or a doctor. Anyone may call themselves an electrician, whatever their training.

What does exist is the standard. NEN 1010 sets out how a low-voltage installation must be built to be safe in the Netherlands. A certified electrician works demonstrably to that standard and can prove it with an inspection report.

Why it matters to your insurer

If a fire or a loss is traced to the electrical installation, your insurer will ask who did the work and whether it was done to the standard. Without a report that is hard to demonstrate. This is not a theoretical risk: outdated installations and unqualified alterations are among the most common causes of house fires.

How to check, in five minutes

  • Ask whether the work will be carried out to NEN 1010 — and what that means in your particular case
  • Ask whether you receive an inspection report, and whether it is included in the price
  • Ask about public liability insurance
  • Ask for the KvK number, the Dutch chamber of commerce registration, and check the company exists
  • Ask for a fixed-price quotation with materials and labour listed separately

A professional answers these without hesitating. Anyone who talks around them has already told you what you needed to know.

Why our electricians are certified

Every electrician in our national network works to NEN 1010 and hands over installation work with an inspection report. We carry liability insurance, guarantee both labour and materials, and notify the network operator where that is required — for an EV charger, a supply upgrade or solar panels.

You hear the price in advance. No call-out charges, no open items, no additional work without agreeing it first.
